Letter dated 5 February 1861 from Benjamin Field of Philadelphia to Major John H. Bills of Bolivar, Tenn., relating to the proposed Crittenden Compromise and the activities of Lincoln supporters and anti-slavery forces in Philadelphia. Includes a photostatic copy of an article from the New York Daily Tribune for 4 February 1861, concerning the efforts in Philadelphia to win support for the Crittenden Compromise among businessmen who had supported Lincoln in the 1860 election. Also includes two letters of January, 1962 from the dealer, providing further information about these items.
